Admiral Mike Mullen

Admiral Mike Mullen didn’t expect to make a career of the U.S. Navy—certainly not after the first ship he commanded crashed into a buoy. But thanks to persistence and a people-focused leadership style, he rose through the ranks to serve two presidents as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a job he says was the hardest of his life. He retired last fall.
